Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson: My Personal Guide to Genuine Masculinity

It’s hard for me not to fanboy a little whenever Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s name comes up. And honestly, can you blame me? Besides the fact that he’s a well rounded actor playing parts as both action figure, role model and ladies man, the man’s journey, words, and actions have been a continuous source of inspiration for most of us.

I used to view masculinity as a game of constant strength, never letting the mask slip. But through Johnson’s example, I’ve realized that it’s not about never faltering. It’s about how you gather yourself and press on.

  1. Welcoming Humor and Not Taking Myself Too Seriously

There were times when I’d get too caught up in my own image, too proud to accept even a hint of ridicule. But seeing someone as formidable as Johnson laugh at himself, it struck a chord with me. It’s been liberating to know that I can laugh at my own missteps and quirks, and it’s honestly one of the best feelings ever.

  1. Rising Above When Things Don’t Go My Way

Life has a peculiar way of throwing curveballs. And, admittedly, I’ve had my fair share. But taking a page out of Johnson’s playbook, I’ve learned the value of resilience. When his football aspirations didn’t pan out, he pivoted, and that’s been a game-changer for me. Every time I’m faced with a hurdle now, I think, WWTRD?   “What would The Rock do?” And then, I do my best to forge ahead.

  1. Cheering for Others, Wholeheartedly

I’ll admit, I’ve been envious before. Watching others succeed while I felt stagnant wasn’t easy. But Johnson’s genuine joy for others’ accomplishments helped me re-evaluate. I’ve found so much more peace and contentment in being a cheerleader for others’ victories than wallowing in my own self-pity.

The Power of Perspective

If there’s one thing Johnson has instilled in me, it’s that mindset is everything. It’s not about flexing muscles but rather flexing the spirit and character.

Today’s Thought Exercise:

  • Have there been moments in your life when someone’s success made you reconsider your own approach to challenges?
  • How has the concept of masculinity evolved for you over the years?
  • If you could share a laugh with The Rock about one embarrassing moment in your life, what would it be?
